Create Dark Witch Fantasy Scene in Photoshop

0
0

In this  Photoshop tutorial, I will show you the processes I used to create this dark witch fantasy scene in Photoshop. We will combine and manipulate several stock images to achieve this effect. We will come across techniques such as layer blending, image adjustments, free transform tool and a number of other manipulation techniques.

This is an intermediate level difficulty tutorial and require prior knowledge of basic Photoshop commands, as well as using layer masks in Photoshop to complete.

Note: The Photoshop tutorial is done in Photoshop CC – therefore some screenshot may have slighting different layout as in the earlier version. Some brushes are exclusive to Photoshop CS6.

Here is a preview of the final effect I have for this tutorial: (click to enlarge)

Step 4

We will work on more digital painting in this step. Use another set of grunge brushes, paint some pattern around the model. You don’t have to limit yourself to a particular style, and please feel free to choose any brush you see fit. Make sure you make a layer below the model layer and paint behind the model’s body.

There are areas that I would recommend to paint regardless what brush you use. Such as:

The left shoulder area:

OK Let’s get started!

To complete this tutorial, you will need the following stocks:

Grass

Model

Fire

Rose

Step 1

Create a new document sized 1400px *670px with black background. Load the grass image into Photoshop and select the grass portion. Copy and paste the selection to our document, place it down the bottom as shown below:

1 paste

Fade the top edge of the grass with a soft eraser:

1 fade

Use the Warp option of the free transform tool to warp the shapr of the grass as shown below:

1 warp

Apply the following 3 adjustment layers on top of the grass layer:

Black and White

1 bw

Levels

1 lvs

Curves

1 curves

and here is the effect so far:

1 effect

Step 2

Use a cloud brush to paint some cloud over the grass as shown below:

2 cloud

Load the model image into Photoshop, select the model and move it over to our document:

2 sel

Position the model to the centre of the canvas, adjust the size of the new layer and use a soft eraser to fade the following areas of the model:

2 paste erase

Apply the following 3 adjustment layers as clipping masks to this model layer:

Black and White

2 bw

Levels

2 lvs

Curves

2 curves

and here is the effect so far:

2 effect

Step 3

We will add the flame effect to our image in this step. Load the fire stock image into Photoshop and select a portion of the fire with Lasso Tool (set feather to 40px):

3 sel

Copy and paste the selection to our document. Place this new layer under the model layer,  and set its layer blend mode to “Screen”:

3 screen

Use the free transform tool to adjust the size of the fire, and place the fire behind the model:

3 paste

Repeat this process and add more fire to our document:

3 more fire

Step 4

This step is optional. Personally I think adding some flying hair would make the overall effect look more dynamic. So I use the Pen Tool to create a path like this:

4 pen

Choose a 2px, hard brush:

4 brush

Then go back to the Pen Tool, right-click and choose “Stroke Path …”:

4 stroke path

Use the brush we chose and add “Simulate Pressure”:

4 brush stroke

Here is the effect you will have:

4 effect

Use a soft eraser to fade the top and bottom of this hair:

4 fade

Duplicate this hair a few times – rotate, re-size the duplicated layers as you go. Also adjust the layer opacity of the duplicated layer.

Eventually you will have the following hair effect:

4 more hair

Step 5

Load the Rose flower petals image into Photoshop and select the petals:

5 sel

Paste it to the following area and it will look like the petals are falling:

5 add

Also add some petals on the face area:

5 add 2

Step 6

We’re almost done! For final touches, I flatten the image and duplicated the background layer, then applied the following Oil Paint filter to the duplicated layer:

6 oil paint

Layer mask on the duplicated layer (in red):

6 mask

As you can see, the oil paint filter smooth out the skin and hair, giving the image a painting effect:

6 after oil paint

and here is the overall effect:

6 effect

I further added some colours with image adjustment layers such as colour balance, selective colour and vibrance. Here is my final result: (click to enlarge)

What you’ll be creating

Let’s start creating this picture with the construction of the base composition. The next step will be to work with motorcyclists, Then I show you how to make realistic shadows, reflections and add dynamics to the racers. In the final part, we will work with adjustment layers and filters to create improve image mood and story, increase sharpen of image. You will need: download all attachment links, a little logic, a good mood and be sure to have Photoshop beginning with CS version.

Tutorial Resources

Step 1

So let’s start from new blank document (File > New or use Cmd/Ctrl + N) with following settings:  Width: 3840, Height: 2160, resolution 200ppi. It’s a larger wallpaper with ratio 16:9.

Step_1

Step 2

First, we need to create a main scene (landscape) in the working document. In this tutorial I use my own abstract render. If you are interested to create your own rendering, I devoted an entire tutorial that you can read here or you can download a ready-made image pack. Very rarely images as an abstract rendering is used as a place of action, not decoration.

Go to File > Place/ Place Embedded… and open image “Colorful abstract render 003” from Colorful abstract render pack.

Step_2

Step 3

In Free transform mode (Cmd/Ctrl + T or Edit > Free Transform) place image in lower left corner of working field and increase the size of the image with holding Shift key. Use the image below to see how I did it. Tap Enter/Return key or check mark at the Properties bar to apply changes.

Step_3

Step 4

Now we continue to complement the scene using wireframe images. Go to File > Place/ Place Embedded… and open image “Wireframe_002”. Place image below colorful render in layer stack. It’s a main image and fill almost all working field. Change Blending Mode to “Multiply”.

Step_4

Step 5

Duplicate this image several times (Cmd/Ctrl + J or go to Layer > Duplicate Layer…) and place it, where lacks texture. Use Free Transform Tool (Cmd/Ctrl + T) to rotate and resize images, as shown in image below. Try to line preserved its direction relative to the main image. We’re doing the race track, so all roads must be correct.

Step_5

Step 6

I conceived the race track as the digital world, where knights fight with speed on metallic horses. So you need to add the appropriate changes. I decided to make the transition between wireframe world and 3D. So I duplicate original colorful render layer (Cmd/Ctr + J or go to Layer > Duplicate Layer…). Then go to Filter > Filter Gallery… > Sketch > Photocopy. Set following values: Detail: 3, Darkness: 6 and apply filter. Reduce layer Opacity to 67%.

Step_6

Step 7

Then on a Smart Filter layer mask I remove some texture from foreground. Take a Brush Tool (B) and set Soft Round brush with Size: 1000px, Opacity 100- 50% and set foreground color to Black (press to set default colors D and then X to switch them). On a layer mask remove from foreground wireframe image. Just leave texture a little bit at the center and on the edges of colorful render.

Step_7

Step_7_1

Step 8

Now we start adding the main characters, namely motorcyclists. Go to File > Place/ Place Embedded… and open image with a Main motorcyclist. Increase image a little and Rotate on -6.30 degrees it to give more dynamism to pose and matching with the surface.

Step_8

Step 9

Now remove the background. I recommend you to use Pen Tool (P) to create a path around motorcyclist. Carefully create a path around. Try to the circuit did not get the background and clothing did not go beyond the path. After having done the path create a selection from it. Right click on working area > Create Vector Mask or use “Mask” button on Properties bar.

Step_9

Optional: you can use Make Selection… command, but in this case you’ll working with raster mask. In window that appear set Feather Radius to 0px and click OK. Add layer mask to hide background by clicking on “Add layer mask” icon at the bottom of Layer panel or go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection.

Step 10

A model is separate from the background we can see the remains of the background. To remove them take a Direct Selection Tool (A) and move anchor points to on a vector mask and remove unnecessary parts of background. Also use Add/Delete Anchor Points Tool (P) to correct path and add more anchor points.

Step_10

Step 11

Repeat steps 8-10 to add more racers. Place them as shown in image below, or do not be afraid to add other racers and change their number. Most importantly, you are exactly placed rider in the desired plane that it matches to perspective. Trying to catch their posture and correctly use it in artwork.

Step_11

Step 12

Once you have added all the racers, we proceed to embed them into the surrounding atmosphere. Let first add a shadow from riders. In our image of the light source is not indicated. So shadows must be soft. Select foreground racer by holding Cmd/Ctrl and clicking on a vector or raster mask. When you get selection create a new layer (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + N or use “Create a new layer” button at Layer panel) and fill selection with black color (Edit > Fill > Black/Color… or use Cmd/Ctrl + Del/ Backspace for background color or Opt/Alt + Del/ Backspace to foreground).

Step_12

Step_12_1

Step 13

Move this layer under all racer layers in layer stack. With Free Transform Tool (Cmd/Ctrl + T) flip shadow vertically (right–click > Flip Vertical). Use Warp tool/ Distort tool to place the shade exactly on the plane and in accordance with the shape of the object. And do not forget that the shadow should be under the wheels of a motorcycle. Now the most important thing is the shadow of the object. Work on the object of itself we will have a little bit later.

Step_13

Step 14

Add a layer mask to shadow layer and with Brush Tool (B) (Soft Round brush, Size: 450px. Or use Eraser Tool (E) on a layer) remove everything that is not located on an abstract render.

Step_14

Step 15

Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur… and set Radius around 15 pixels. That should be enough for a realistic shadow. Change layer Blending Mode to “Multiply” and reduce Opacity to 85- 60%. This will help you better adapt the shadows to the picture and make it more realistic. Also in the picture I am working with Smart objects so I can change filter settings in any time. In you want, you can convert shadow layer to Smart Object and then add layer mask and “Gaussian Blur” filter.

Step_15

Step 16

Repeat steps 12 -15 for Yellow motorcyclist and Front motorcyclist. Now create a new layer (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + N or use “Create a new layer” icon at Layer panel) above all racer layers and use black soft round brush with Opacity 20-50% and draw shadow on wheels and motorcycle places of contact with the surface. Be very careful to keep realistic shadows. Select all racer layers in layer stack and group it (Layer > Group Layers… or use Cmd/Ctrl + G). Change name group to “Motorcyclists”.

Step_16

Step 17

When the work with the shadows is completed, we can start adding reflections.

Keep in mind that the abstract render is glossy. And in addition to a soft shadow, you will need to add reflections on different planes render to the picture looks realistic. Reflections will be not only under motorcycle, but the side planes. So, duplicate group “Motorcyclists” (Layer > Duplicate Group or Cmd/Ctrl + J). Change name to “Reflection” and delete all shadow layers and Jumping motorcyclist layer in this group.  Select group and go to Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical.

Step_17

Step 18

  • Now move and transform these layers so it fit to originals. The same technique as work
  • with shadows. But do not forget to make one more copy of Front motorcyclist and
  • White motorcyclist layers to place it on walls. Change group blending mode to “Soft
  • Light” and add a layer mask to remove some reflections with Brush Tool (B).

Step_18

Step 19

Now duplicate “Motorcyclists” group again and convert it to Smart Object (right-click on a group > Convert to Smart Object). Go to Filter > Blur > Radial Blur… In window that appears set Amount: 10, Blur Method: Zoom, Quality: Best and apply changes.

This create effect of motion for the riders.

Step_19

Step 20

Go to smart filter layer mask and fill it with black color (Edit > Fill > Color…). Use Brush Tool (B) with white color, Size: 300-200px and soft round form to return effect on the edges of riders.

Step_20

Step_20_1

Step 21

On this stage, group all motorcyclists’ layers and groups it (Layer > Group Layers or Cmd/Ctrl + G). Next we will only work with adjustment layers Create a new adjustment layer “Color Balance” (use “Create a new Fill or Adjustment layer” icon or go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance…). In Properties tab click on “making a clipping mask” button and set following values for mid tones:

Cyan-Red: +19;

Magenta-Green: 0;

Yellow-Blue: -16.

All other settings do not change.

Step_21

Step 22

Now add a Gradient Fill layer (Layer > New Fill Layer > Gradient…). In window that appears set Gradient: Black, White; Style: Linear; Angle: 120 degrees; Scale: 100% and click OK. Make a Clipping Mask to a riders group (Cmd/Ctrl + Opt/Alt + G or right click on the layer > Create a Clipping Mask). Change Blending Mode to “Overlay” and reduce Opacity to 20%.

Step_22

Step 23

Now you need a little bit to adjust the lighting direction. Create a new layer (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + N) and set Blending Mode to “Overlay” and Opacity to 30%, make a clipping mask to group (Cmd/Ctrl + Opt/Alt + G).

Step_23

Step 24

Take a Brush Tool (B) and select the Soft Round brush preset, and set the size around 250px, Opacity around 10 – 20% and use white /black colors to create lighting/shadow on riders. If you need to remove unnecessary lighting, use Eraser Tool (E).

Step 25

Step_25

Step 26

To their appearance matched the place where they were going, I used “Photocopy” filter from Filter Gallery. Go to Filter > Filter Gallery… > Sketch > Photocopy. Set following values: Detail: 1, Darkness: 20 and apply filter.

Step_26

Step 27

This is what it looks like after applying the filter. In order not to repeat each time the same path, select each layer and use Cmd/Ctrl + F to apply last filter.

Step_27

Step 28

Add an adjustment layer “Black &White” to create effect of “changing reality” (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Black &White…). Leave default settings and on layer mask remove effect from foreground with Brush Tool (B) (Size: 600-200px, Opacity: 50%, soft round brush). Try to make the transition between wireframe world and colorful render.

Step_28

Step_28_1

Step 29

In last step I increase sharpness of the image. Create a merged copy of image (Cmd/Ctrl + Opt/Alt + Shift + E), convert it to Smart Object (right click on layer > Convert to Smart Object). Go to Filter > Other > High Pass. Set Radius to 2.0 pixels and click OK.

Step_29

Step 30

To get rid of the gray background change Blending Mode to “Linear Light”. Using this mode will overlay greatly increase the brightness, so reduce Fill to 50% (do not use Opacity).

Step_30

Well, that’s all! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and you could find it useful. I am satisfied with my result. I hope that you are satisfied your result too and spent time with benefits. Thank you very much for taking the time to study this tutorial! I wish all lucked in your future achievements! I thank the authors of resources for their excellent work and good quality! Copy and paste the selection to our document, rotate it so it becomes up side down as shown below:

2 rotate

Use a soft eraser (set its brush flow and opacity to both around 50%), fade the edge of the mountain as shown below:

2 erase

Repeat the above step, add 2 more floating mountain into the far distant position. You can adjust the size of the mountain by using the Free Transform tool:

2 more

Step 3

Load the waterfall stock image into Photoshop, select the main falls portion of the image:

3 sel

Copy and paste the selection to our document, flip the new layer horizontally, and place on the left side of the floating mountain:

3 paste

Use a soft eraser to fade the edges of the waterfall, so it blends into the mountain:

3 erase

Apply the following adjustment layers as clipping masks to this waterfall layer:

Black and White

3 bw

Levels

3 lvs

and here is the effect so far:

3 effect

Repeat the above process, add another small waterfall on the right side of the mountain:

3 add

Step 4

Load the spacecraft image into Photoshop. Select the spacecraft:

4 sel

Copy and paste the selection onto our document, re-size it to a very small scale, and place it to the following position below the floating mountain:

4 paste resize

Use a small soft brush to paint a white light behind and below the spacecraft:

4 light

We will add some trail light behind the spacecraft. Create a new layer and draw a rectangular selection, and fill the selection as shown below:

4 fill

Apply the following Gaussian Blur setting to this rectangular shape:

4 gau blur

Rotate it slightly clockwise:

4 rotate

And scale it down a bit:

4 scale

and this is the effect you will be aiming to achieve:

4 effect

Repeat this process, add another trail light for the spacecraft:

4 more

Use the cloud brush, paint some cloud effect around the spacecraft:

4 cloud

Optionally, you can add a few more spacecrafts around the mountain at the bottom. Make sure you adjust the size of the spacecraft so they don’t have the same size to each other:

4 more craft

Step 5

I added a light shooting from the top of the mountain using the same method as the trail light in Step 4:

5 add light

Paint some cloud around the mountain peak using the cloud brushes:

5 cloud

Step 6

We will be adding some final touches to our image in this final step. I use the cloud brush to paint some extra cloud around the mountain, in the following areas:

6 cloud

Use the bird brush downloaded at the beginning of the tutorial, paint some flying birds – make sure you lower the opacity so they’re barely visible, and do not use large size birds:

7 bird

Add some particles effect around the bottom mountain with a particle brush:

7 particle

I further added some colours to the image with several adjustment layers added on top of all previous layers, such as selective colours, vibrance and brightness and contrast. Please feel free to experiment with different colour schemes, you don’t have to limit yourself to using my colours.

We will add some fire the building. Load the fire stock into Photoshop and use the Lasso Tool with 40px feather, select a small portion of the fire:

4 fire

Copy and paste the selection to our document, change the layer blend mode of the new fire layer to “Screen”:

4 screen

Repeat this process and add a few of the fire effect around the building:

4 fire 2

Step 5

Load the solider stock into Photoshop and cut out the solider, paste it into the following position of our document. Use a soft eraser to fade the edge into the background smoke:

5 paste

Apply the following image adjustment layers as clipping mask to the soldier layer:

Black and White

5 bw

Levels

5 lvs

Layer mask on the above levels adjustment layer:

5 lvs mask

Curves

5 curves

and this is the effect so far:

I added some fiery effect around the helmet using the same method as described in Step 4:

5 fire

Step 6

Load the spaceship stock into Photoshop and select it:

6 space

Copy and paste the spaceship into our document and reduce its size:

6 resize

Apply the following image adjustments to the spaceship layer:

Black and White

6 bw

Levels

6 lvs

Add a few more spaceships around the canvas, make sure you adjust their size:

6 more

Step 7

We will add some engine light to the spaceships. Use a small soft brush like this:

7 bru

Paint a dot to one of the spaceships:

7 paint

Duplicate this dot layer, and free transform it as shown below:

7 free

and here is the effect you will have:

7 effect

Apply this to all spaceships on our canvas:

7 effect 2

Step 8

We’re almost done! To spice up the effect I added some more fire effect to the building top:

8 more fire

Also added some debris around the canvas with the debris brush:

8 particles

I then flattened the image, duplicate the background layer and apply the following “Film Grain” filter to the duplicated layer:

8 film grain

You will see the image become slightly grainy:

8 grain

I added some colour with a couple of colour balance adjustment layers. I won’t show the exact adjustment layers here, and would like you to experiment with different colour schemes and form your own design.

Here is the final effect I have: (click to enlarge)
